Pregnancy goes by in a blink. A maternity session is a chance to slow things down, celebrate this season, and create images that feel natural, meaningful, and very you. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, a little preparation goes a long way in creating relaxed, beautiful photos.
As a New Hampshire maternity photographer, I’ve put together this guide to help you feel confident and ready for your session.

When to Schedule Your Maternity Session
The sweet spot for maternity photos is typically between 28 and 34 weeks. At this point, your belly is beautifully round, you’re (usually) still comfortable moving around, and we have flexibility in case weather or schedules need to shift.
If you’re planning a newborn session, your maternity session is also a wonderful way for us to get to know each other ahead of time, so when baby arrives, everything feels easy and familiar.
A Great Warm‑Up for Your Newborn Session
One of the biggest perks of a maternity session is that it helps families feel more relaxed in front of the camera before newborn photos.
You’ll learn how I gently guide you, what posing feels like, and how natural our time together is. By the time your newborn session arrives, it feels less like meeting a photographer and more like welcoming a familiar face into your home.
Where Sessions Take Place: Outdoors or In Your Home
Maternity sessions can take place:
Outdoors at a beautiful New Hampshire location (fields, trails, lakes, or quiet scenic spots)
In your home, where things feel personal and cozy
In‑home sessions are especially meaningful if you want to include your nursery or capture everyday moments in the space where your baby will be welcomed.

How to Prepare Your Home (If We’re Shooting Indoors)
No need for perfection—just a little intention.
Here’s what matters most:
Choose rooms with good window light (living room, primary bedroom, nursery)
Declutter surfaces if possible (nightstands, counters, floors)
Plan to include the nursery if it’s ready—or even partially ready
Turn off overhead lights; window light is always best
That’s it. Simple, calm spaces photograph beautifully.
Petite Maternity Session Add‑On (Newborn Clients)
If you’re booked for an in‑home newborn session, you can add a petite maternity session for half price.
This is a short, sweet session focused on documenting your pregnancy—perfect if you want meaningful images without committing to a full maternity session.
What to Wear for Your Maternity Photos
For Mom
Long dresses or fitted maternity gowns photograph beautifully
Soft, neutral tones and earth colors work especially well
Avoid busy patterns and logos
Choose something you feel comfortable and confident in
If you’re unsure, I’m always happy to help you decide.
For Your Partner
Neutral clothing that complements (not matches) yours
Think solid shirts, sweaters, or button‑downs
Avoid bright colors, large logos, or heavy patterns
Barefoot at home or simple shoes outdoors both work well.

Including Siblings or Pets
Siblings
Let them know ahead of time that photos will be relaxed and fun
There’s no pressure for constant smiles—snuggles and curiosity are perfect
We’ll start with family photos, then give kids space when needed
Pets
Pets are always welcome
A quick walk beforehand can help burn off extra energy
Treats nearby never hurt
Real-life moments are always better than forced ones.
Final Thoughts on NH Maternity Photography
Your maternity session isn’t about posing perfectly—it’s about connection, anticipation, and documenting a season that passes far too quickly.
If you’re looking for NH maternity photography that feels relaxed, natural, and heartfelt, I’d love to help tell this part of your story.
When you’re ready, reach out HERE, and we’ll plan something that feels just right for your family.
